Your 1302/14th April arrangements in detail for
occupation of Bogue forts 24 hours after receipt of orders
have been completed for some time between G.0.C. and myself using forces now available in Hong Kong (1) Naval 1st Cruiser Squadron less H.M.S. "Daunt less", H.M.S."Hermes" Aircraft
from Aerodrome 8th Destroyer Flotilla? (less) three, H.M.S.
"Wanderer", H.M.S."Wolverine" Submarines and Auxiliaries (ii)
Military three battalions and Pack Artillery.
This can be
done at present because (a) there is every possibility of
surprise (b) Chinese have not yet put forts into state of
preparedness (c) Governor would allow Colony ?(being)
If
de nuded of troops temporarily for an operation be considers
of immediate importance (d) position has been frequently and
recently reconnoitred and approaches sounded. If defences
fall easily it would be practicable to follow up success at
once particularly as it is believed that intensive air
?(attack) on Dane Island would cause defences there to
collapse. If delayed however an additional "C" or "D" Class
Cruiser and an extra Battalion would be required.
